And why is he depicted as practicing divination by arrows?”

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 7.841 Narrated by Abu Talha: Allah’s Apostle said, “Angels (of mercy) do not enter a house where there are pictures.” The sub-narrator Busr added: “Then Zaid fell ill and we paid him a visit. Behold! There was, hanging at his door, a curtain decorated with a picture. I said to ‘Ubaidullah Al-Khaulani, the stepson of Maimuna, the wife of the Prophet, “Didn’t Zaid tell us about the picture the day before yesterday?” ‘Ubaidullah said, “Didn’t you hear him saying: ‘except a design in a garment’?”

CARTOONS AND CARICATURES

Q. What is the ruling on those cartoons that we see in newspapers and magazines, cartoons that depict human beings?
A. The drawings mentioned are not allowed, they represent a widespread evil which it is obligatory to avoid because of the generality of the authentic Ahadith proving the prohibition of pictures of any creature with a soul – be they made with a machine, by hand or otherwise.
From these, what is recorded by Al-Bukhari in his Sahih that Abu Juhayfah, may Allaah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) cursed the person who consumes Riba (usury and interest) and what he eats, and he cursed the picture maker.
It is also recorded in the Two Sahihs that the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said: “The most severely punished people on the Day of Judgement will be the picture makers.” (Al- Bukhari no. 5950 and Muslim no. 2109)
He (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) also said: “The makers of these pictures will be punished on the Day of Judgement; it will be said to them: Bring to life that which you have created.” (Al- Bukhari no. 5957)
There are many other confirmed Ahadith on this topic. The only exception from this prohibition is what is necessary, for Allaah Almighty says: “While He has explained to you in detail what is forbidden to you, except under compulsion of necessity.” (Al- An’am 6:119)
I ask Allaah Almighty to guide the Muslims to adhere to the Shari’ah of their Lord, to follow the way of their Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), and to be wary of whatever contradicts that way. Indeed, Allaah is the best to ask.
PICTURES, MAGAZINES AND TV: PUTTING THEM IN A PLACE OF PRAYER
Photos fall under the category of unlawful pictures, photos and all other form of pictures, no matter what instrument is used to create them, share the same ruling: They are unlawful. Also it makes no difference what you mentioned about the photo requiring no effort. It makes no difference as all photos are unlawful regardless of the means to produce them. It is permissible to buy educational magazines, magazines filled with useful information, even if they have pictures of humans or animals in them. This is because we buy the magazine not for the pictures but for the news and information. And it is permissible to place such a magazine in a place of prayer, but by either covering the pictures or obliterating the head of the pictures. It is not permissible to put a television in a place of prayer because of the falsehood and frivolity that television signifies.
Also from the Permanent Committee: It is not allowed to take pictures of beings that have souls, a rule that incompasses cameras and other instruments, with the exception of pictures that are necessary such as: Passports or identity photos.
Allaah says: “But do not help one another in sin and transgression.” (Ma’idah 5:2)
